These electric bikes just keep getting more refined, and the range is going up. I'm pretty sure there's some sort of electric bike in my future (would make a great second commuter/errand runner), and maybe yours:
The June 2012 Dirt Bike magazine has a review of the Zero MX bike. The review is favorable and they say the bike is a blast but it's kind of an apple and oranges comparison with a gas dirt bike.
The electric motor changes the way you drive the bike. There is no engine braking, and no noise. No noise makes it hard to determine how much throttle you are giving it and since it has only one gear, half throttle is basically half speed. Once at half speed the first half of the throttle rotation does nothing.
Their conclusion is that it is not a replacement but an addition and worth the price.
Just as an aside the use of MPG for comparing vehicles can be misleading.

^ Attrition, I suppose that at first, with no engine braking, the electric bike could feel as if it was running away with you -- let off on the "gas" and it just keeps rolling along. I guess you'd have to rely much more upon the brakes.
Again, I'd love to try one. BTW, thanks for the MPG links -- interesting & informative.
